Whitby is a historic town in North Yorkshire on the north-east coast of England. Nowadays it is a fishing port and tourist destination. The town has a history which dates back, at least, to Saxon times. Its early history is inseparable from the development of the monastery (Whitby Abbey) built on the east cliff.
